Fairy Chimneys, a unique landform, were formed as a result of the eruptions of calderas, which are active volcanic mechanisms that took place ten million years ago.
These formations, created by the erosion of tuffy rocks through intense floodwaters flowing from the valley slopes and the wind, have conical bodies. The diameter of the rock blocks on the upper parts of these mushroom-like structures can vary between 1 meter and 15 meters. The bodies of the fairy chimneys are usually composed of soft minerals, while the tops are made of hard, impermeable rocks. This composition has allowed the upper parts to remain intact.
The valley, used as a hermitage by priests and monks in the past, hosts numerous rock-cut monasteries, churches, chapels, and settlements, as well as structures such as tunnels and mills. The most well-known of these is the hermitage cell of St. Simeon in one of the three-headed fairy chimneys. St. Simeon, who lived a solitary life around Aleppo in the 5th century, came here to escape the crowds when rumors emerged that he was performing miracles among the people. The monks living in Cappadocia also carved out rooms in the columns here at different times and led a reclusive life.
When you look carefully at the columns in the region, it is possible to compare them to various objects. Turning this into a game and exploring the region transforms your visit into a modern-day adventure.
Look, have you seen the rabbit?
