The Polish architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski is chosen as the winner in the competition for the production of the Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet. However, the argument that the architect will build the building over the Poltva river leads to controversy. Zygmunt Gorgolewski begins construction of the Opera House in 1897, but nobody trusts the structure during the construction process, and he himself dies in 1900 without seeing the completion of the construction. According to some rumors, it is said that Zygmunt Gorgolewski committed suicide because he could not stand the pressure. A small part of this river can be seen on the lower floor of the opera house. The Poltva River flowing under the stage continues along the deep center below the Svobody street where the Opera House is located.
