Historic quarter

Kuveloğlu Han is said to be a hotel built in the 19th century by a French architect—some sources date it to 1888—for the accommodation of Ottoman trade caravans entering the city from Edirnekapı. Located in the Kantarcılar area of Eminönü Küçükpazar district, this historic inn has many stories to tell.

The building’s ceiling, made of glass, has withstood numerous fires due to the durable materials used in its construction. A cistern with a depth of four meters lies beneath the inn. Rainwater accumulating on the roof flows through a pipe system and collects in the cistern. In the past, this water was used to extinguish fires in the surrounding area.

Kuveloğlu Han remains active today. The ground floor houses Tarihi Pide Fırını, a pide shop that has been in operation for 38 years, while the upper floors host various workshops specializing in the repair of guns, rifles, and leather jackets. The pide shop and the workshops have the following opening hours:

Friday: 10:30 AM – 8:00 PM

Saturday: 10:30 AM – 8:00 PM (Hours might differ)

Sunday: 10:30 AM – 8:00 PM (Hours might differ)

Monday: 10:30 AM – 8:00 PM (Hours might differ)

Tuesday: 10:30 AM – 8:00 PM (Hours might differ)

Wednesday: 10:30 AM – 8:00 PM

The Kantarcılar area was a hub of commerce during the Ottoman period, frequented by merchants and caravans. This district saw significant activity during times of bustling trade, and Kuveloğlu Han was a key part of this vibrant community.
