An imposing castle at the foot of the mountains: Peles Castle

Peles Castle was built by Carol, the first king of Romania, in the Prahova Valley, on the border of the Bucegi Mountains.

Hundreds of workers worked for the castle, the construction of which began in 1873, and it was completed in ten years. However, King Carol I died in 1914 without seeing the final version of the castle.

Taking its name from the Peles Creek that runs through the courtyard, the castle’s 160 rooms are decorated with the best examples of European art. It is rumored that there are many gates and secret passages in the castle. In 1906, Romania’s first film screening was held in its 60-seat theater.

The Neo-Renaissance style castle is the first in Europe to have central heating, electricity and a vacuum system.

It is known that during the Ceausescu period, the leading communists of the country and important statesmen from all over the world were hosted in the rooms of the castle and the region was closed to the public. Many famous names from Nixon to Ford, from Gaddafi to Arafat have stayed here.
